Have you ever noticed that the next step in life often doesn't become visible until you've taken the one right in front of you?
We are conditioned to want the whole map. We want certainty before commitment, answers before action, and guarantees before we move forward. Yet Spirit seems to operate differently. Often, we are given just enough light for the next step, just enough guidance for today, and just enough faith to keep moving. Looking back over my own life, some of the most meaningful experiences, relationships, and opportunities arrived not because I had everything figured out, but because I was willing to say yes before I knew exactly where the path would lead.
Lately, I've been reflecting on how many unexpected invitations have appeared in my life. Some have come through conversations, some through opportunities to serve, and others through those gentle nudges of Spirit that simply whisper, "Trust me." What I have discovered is that clarity is often the result of movement, not the prerequisite for it. The path appears as we walk it. Doors open as we approach them. Possibilities reveal themselves when we are willing to step beyond what feels comfortable and familiar.
This willingness to move forward without seeing the entire journey also requires trust in the wisdom of timing. Nature teaches us that life unfolds in seasons. There are seasons of growth and harvest, activity and rest, beginnings and endings. There are also seasons of release. While we often focus on what we hope to create, Spirit sometimes invites us first to consider what we are being called to let go.
On Sunday, we explored this wisdom through the beauty of the autumn landscape. As leaves drift from the trees, nature offers a powerful spiritual lesson. Trees do not cling to what has completed its purpose. They release with grace, trusting that what appears to be an ending is preparation for a new beginning. Our lives invite us to do the same.
Together we reflected on the question: What am I carrying that Spirit is asking me to release? Perhaps it is an old hurt, an expectation that no longer fits, a fear of change, or the need to control how life unfolds. Sometimes even an identity that once served us well must be released so that we can grow into the next expression of who we are becoming. Letting go is not about loss; it is about making room.
We also explored the spiritual practice of surrendering. Surrender is not giving up. It is letting go of the struggle and trusting that Divine Wisdom can see farther than we can. Just as a gardener creates space for new growth, our lives sometimes require openness and trust before something new can emerge.
As we move through this beautiful season in Maine, may each falling leaf remind us that release is a sacred part of life's unfolding. The leaves fall, the roots deepen, and beneath the surface something new is already being prepared. The question before us is simple: What am I ready to release so that something new can grow?
Next Sunday: Trusting the Season You're In
After letting go, can we trust what comes next?
Join me as we explore the wisdom of divine timing and discover how faith can sustain us during seasons when growth is happening beneath the surface. Together, we'll reflect on the question: Can I trust that my life is unfolding in divine order, even when I cannot see the whole picture?
I look forward to being with you on Sunday.
You are a blessing in my life,
Rev. Patricia Bessey
